Love, Sight Unseen! From the minute the Nashville Music Medics arrived at the Tennessee School for the Blind in Donelson,TN and greeted the children, we were overwhelmed with love from everyone there. They were warm and inviting and of course we just had to return that love before we even started to sing! Every child that we spoke with was all smiles from the attention we paid them. Phil Berg, one of our bass singers, started off by kneeling down to make friends with one little guy in the front row, and he ended up receiving a “high-5”.
The afternoon only got better once we started singing and interacting with the kids. The children and staff really had some fun when we sang our hallmark song “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.” Of course, maybe even surprisingly, their little faces really lit up when I started telling Dad Jokes (or in my case, GrandDad jokes). Even their teachers laughed. There was one little guy, Lucas, who really was delighted when he heard his name as we personalized the name song, “The Lucas Song”. He had a smile on his face the rest of the day, even aswe were taking group photos together as it was nearing the time to depart.
The one that touched me the most was a sweet little girl at the end of the front row with the beautiful pig-tails. As the Medics began to leave, we joined everyone gathered and talked with the children. I leaned over to talk with her and told her how much we loved coming to sing for them. I asked her name and she told me it was Miriam. I said “What a beautiful name you have; I have a cousin with the same name.” She smiled and said “I really loved you guys and hope that you will come back again.”
There are few words to express our gratitude for this wonderful gift we received by serving the children at the Tennessee School for the Blind. To have expanded our ministry to more than children in the local Nashville hospitals is not something we soon forget. A big “thank you” to photographer Chris Ducharme, another gracious staff member who shared his candid photos with us.
